Message from Rael Week 6 Term 1 2020

Coronavirus Special

Dear Parents and Carers,

The School has been closely monitoring the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic through the ACT Health Directorate web page: https://health.act.gov.au/public-health-alert/updated-information-about-covid-19 as well as receiving advice from the Chief Executive of the AIS. ACT Health has assured us that they are in a strong position to respond to an outbreak of COVID-19.

These responses will be based on advice and learnings from other jurisdictions. This may include that if a student or staff member were to test positive to the virus, the impacted school may close for a short period while ACT Health investigates the incident and the school is closed appropriately – called a discovery period. Those students and staff identified as close contacts of a case will need to self-quarantine at home for 14 days.

Should there be any occurance of Covid-19 within our school community, a community message will be sent out to notify all.

We also remind parents that children who are exhibiting cold and flu symptoms should remain at home until symptoms have ceased.

If you are concerned that you have been exposed to someone with Covid-19, please contact your GP by phone, in the first instance, or go to the Weston Creek Walk-In Centre (24 Parkinson Street, Weston) for assessment.

With this in mind, we are taking a proactive, front-foot approach, to minimalise the potential spread of Covid-19. Procedures we have put in place include:

  • Additional Grace and Courtesy lessons given around handwashing protocol, coughing etiquette, and toileting routines
  • Children will be asked to wash or sanitise hands upon entry into the classroom in the morning, as well as before eating, after coming in from the playground and after blowing noses
  • Shelves, tables and chairs will be disinfected daily
  • All mattresses and sleeping mats will be disinfected daily
  • All linens and towels will be washed at temperatures of 60 degrees or higher
  • Increased cleaning of the school using hospital grade disinfectant
  • Leadership Team daily meeting

One of the major changes which we will begin to implement from next week, is asking Cycle 1 children to bring in their own fruit for morning tea. We are asking that children refrain from food preparation activities within the classroom, including the serving of food.

Medical/Action Plan reviews

We ask that all parents review their children’s health plans to ensure they are up to date.

Deferring all non-essential school activity

We believe it is prudent to cancel scheduled events and community gatherings for the time being. At this point, this will include the Grandfriends’ Afternoon and the end of term Movie Night/BBQ. We hope to go ahead with a modified Colour Run and Disco for the children on the last afternoon of term.

Swimming Postponed

All excursions will be suspended until further notice. Sadly, this means our swimming program due to start next week will now be postponed until later in the year. Excursions that are currently planned for later in the year will be reviewed nearer the time.

In the event of a prolonged closure of school, we are developing strategies which will enable us to maintain continuity of education to all children.

As always, we are committed to supporting the health, safety and well-being of our students and staff and are always available to answer and questions and talk through any concerns that families may have.

Where can I go for more information?

The community is urged to keep up to date through the ACT Health website (www.health.act.gov.au). This is where the latest health advice is available. People can also call the Coronavirus Health Information Line on 1800 020 080 for further information on COVID-19. The line operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The latest advice from ACT Health for Parents of Children in School or Childcare can be found here: Advice for Parents of Children in School or Childcare

Kindest regards,

Rael
