Featured Illustration – ‘We Walk When It’s Cloudy and Grey’ by Alison Lester
This week’s featured illustration has proven to be the most popular so far. It’s the enchanting We Walk When It’s Cloudy and Grey by Alison Lester, from her book ‘Magic Beach’.
From the moment it starts ‘At the beach, at our magic beach’, you are immediately drawn into the best day ever at the seaside. The whole book is written with a wonderfully rhythmical 2 verse format, with each verse in the pair enjoying a full 2-page spread. The first verse, which always starts with ‘At the beach, at our magic beach’, is accompanied by an inviting illustration of families doing fabulous, beachy things related to the verse. For example, in the illustration above, we are ‘looking for driftwood, feathers and shells washed up on the edge of the bay’. The second verse then delves into the fantastic and imaginary, with appropriately eye-catching illustrations to match, and may take the reader to dive with mermaids, find pirates treasure or even sail over the edge of the world.
Lester’s illustrations are wonderfully real and very easy to imagine yourself in. This, combined with the fantastic two verse format that tags between reality and imagination, makes ‘Magic Beach’ a very enjoyable book to read together. The rhyme is just as enticing for beginning readers (who will easily memorise the poetry) or more confident lower primary readers (who will get immense satisfaction from the way all the sounds hang beautifully together). Both will enjoy searching for the myriad details in every illustration.
